Hoch Publishing Co. Inc.

Position: News Editor

Help lead the 11-person team responsible for producing a record 40 statewide awards this year at what was judged the best mid-size non-daily in Kansas for both news and advertising. As news editor, you'll coordinate reporting, edit copy, help design pages and produce your own enterprising features, engaging photos and aggressive news coverage.

Experience preferred, but recent graduates who have completed internships and served as senior editors in student media will be considered.

We pride ourselves on reporting the unexpected, with a strong focus on human faces and dramatic storytelling. Our readers literally line up to pick up their papers from our office each week, and our paid website records almost unprecedentedly high numbers for visit duration and frequency. We aren't some chain with a cheap, formulaic approach. We view ourselves as a vitally important, locally owned community service, and we want our news editor to be not just a reporter and editor but also an active community member.

Our location may seem a bit out of the way, on the west edge of the Flint Hills in central Kansas, but it is center stage for demonstrating that the future of journalism is in high-quality, human-focused storytelling that matters. An hour north of Wichita, we're nestled between two resort lakes in a low-cost rural county seat that considers itself a thriving community for the arts, with nationally ranked schools, top-notch public facilities and a wealth of historic buildings.

The salaried position involves a minimum one-year commitment, fully paid individual health insurance, paid vacation after a year and a year-end profit-sharing bonus.
