Angela M. Powers, Ph.D. is a specialist in media management and economics and internationally known for her work on leadership in newsrooms and the changing media landscape. Her most recent work focuses on the organizational ecology of family-owned news media and the role of communication infrastructure and information technologies in organizational change and transformation. Her research has appeared in such books as Changing the News; The Media as a Driver of the Information Society; Leadership in the Media Industry; Corporate Governance in Media Organizations, Media Management: A Casebook Approach; and in journals such as Media Transformations Journal, Observatorio Journal of Communication Studies, Journal of Media Economics, Health Communication, Women and Health, Journalism and Mass Communication Quarterly, and Newspaper Research Journal.
Dr. Powers teaches undergraduate courses in media management and graduate seminars on media economics, media convergence, issues in broadcast news, and corporate governance. An expert in research methods, she has also taught courses in survey research methodology and multivariate statistics. In addition, she has extensive international experience. As a visiting scholar in the Middle East, she served as a consultant for managers at national media such as Al-Ahram in Cairo. Her appointment at the Media Management and Transformation Center in the Jönköping International Business School of Sweden was to explore news in developing democracies. As a Senior Fulbright Specialist and Fulbright Scholar, Dr. Powers facilitated creation of the first master’s programs in communications in Lithuania at Vytautas Magnus University. She also held a visiting professorship at the University of the West Indies and continues to serve as an external reviewer of graduate theses. Dr. Powers also has held leadership positions in professional organizations such as the World Media Economics organization and the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communications. She served as Director and Professor of the A.Q. Miller School of Journalism and Mass Communications from 2004-2012.
Prior to coming to Kansas State University, Dr. Powers was an assistant director of University Honors at Northern Illinois University where she was a professor in the Department of Communication and received a University Excellence in Teaching Award. Professional experience includes work as a television journalist for NBC and CBS affiliates in Illinois before receiving her Ph.D. from Michigan State University and her M.S. and B.S. from Illinois State University.
She is married to Dr. Kent Kerby and has a daughter Kathleen and a son Sean. They reside in Manhattan, Kansas.
