A.Q. Miller School of Journalism and Mass Communications

Student Computer Policy

This policy will be implemented with the start of the fall of 2014 semester. The school will continue to provide high-end labs.

Computer system requirements

A specific computer platform is not required. The student may choose PC or Mac, but it must meet the minimum requirements for operating the Adobe Creative Cloud software. A comprehensive listing of system requirements is available at http://www.adobe.com/products/creativecloud/tech-specs.html#requirements.

The school will provide printers. For high-end photo printing the school will provide ink, however, students should provide any specialty paper they use.

Software requirements

Computer rentals

The school has a limited number of laptops available for semester rental by students who do not have their own computer. Fees charged are based on a percentage of the computer purchase price, prorated over 3 years. Students renting a computer for three years will own it.

A limited number of computers will be available for short-term rental by students having computer problems. The short-term rental fee will be $20 per week. The short-term rental fee will be adjusted on used computers based on a four-year expected life span.

High-end computer labs

The School will provide high-end computer labs. High-end labs deal with simulation, modeling, rendering or storing large amounts of data that are impractical or too time consuming for the average computer. A high-end lab is any lab where the computer and software needed to perform the designated function would cost more than $4,000.
