A.Q. Miller School seeks academic advisor
The A.Q. Miller School of Journalism and Mass Communications invites applications for the position of academic advisor. The successful applicant will advise students with regard to academic and course requirements and work collaboratively with students regarding course selection and registration in a timely manner, meet with prospective students and parents, lead orientation sessions, supervisor student ambassadors and coordinate outreach activities with regard to recruitment. The ideal candidate will possess strong communication, leadership, and management skills, and the ability to meet the academic and career needs of a diverse student population.
The position is a 12-month, full-time appointment. Review of applications will begin May 26 and continue until position is filled. A bachelor’s degree, in communications, journalism, counseling, education or closely related field is required along with three years of academic or professional communications. Previous post-secondary advising experience is highly desirable.
The Miller School offers instruction in journalism, advertising and public relations. Undergraduates who have successfully completed first-year courses generally receive advising in the major curriculum from faculty members. The individual in this position works primarily with incoming students (freshman and transfer students).
- Academic Advising of Current and New Pre-majors. Assist about 300 freshman and transfer students with the scheduling of their courses in order to make timely progression to the application to the major. This would include course planning, major selection and completion of journalism and university degree requirements. Academic advisor provides essential support and service to students and contribute to the university’s goals of promoting student learning, development, and success, as well as student persistence and timely graduation. Primary responsibilities are to provide comprehensive academic advising and degree planning. Also participate in summer advising of incoming freshmen and new transfer students. Advisor may also have the opportunity to teach the MC010 Pre-Major Orientation class.
- Advise Prospective Students: Meet with high school students and their parents, visit with potential transfer students, explain entrance requirements to internal transfer students.
- Select and Supervise Student Ambassadors: Identify and supervise top journalism students in assisting with recruitment and outreach activities, such as the Advisory Council meeting and on campus lectures and events.
- Recruitment: Responsible for recruiting students to the undergraduate program. Attending recruiting events on and off campus with the Admissions Office and attending conferences for recruiting and professional development.
- Coordinate Outreach Activities for Undergraduate Program: Coordinate activities that pertain to recruitment and retention of students.
The position requires a person with enthusiasm, knowledge of the discipline, excellent interpersonal and group communication skills, and superior writing ability.
