Tom Hallaq's professional background is in live television producing and directing. He was part of the startup news team for KSTU Fox 13 in Salt Lake City, UT were he also produced for the Utah Jazz broadcasts. He has also worked as a News Operations Manager for WDEF-TV, CBS, in Chattanooga, TN and for KNDU-TV, NBC, in Kennewick, WA. In addition to his work at network affiliates, he has also been involved in several award-winning, independent productions and continues to stay involved as a working freelance professional in the video industry.
Dr. Hallaq earned his Bachelors of Arts (B.A.) degree in Communications from Brigham Young University, his Master's of Education (M.Ed.) in Instructional Media and Technology from Eastern Washington University and a Doctorate of Education (Ed.D.) in Educational Leadership/ Instructional Methods and Design from Idaho State University where he was also on the faculty as an Assistant Professor. He comes to Kansas State University with more than 14 years teaching experience.
His research interests include media literacy, cultural effects of media, and broadcast history. He also has interests in the impact of religious influence on news reporting.
Tom has lived in several states throughout his professional career. Although he has not previously lived in Kansas, his family roots are here where his mother was born and both his maternal grandparents were born and raised. It’s a little like coming home.
