A letter from our director
Hello JMC family,
Welcome back from spring break and into our distance learning for the rest of the spring semester.
Already in this first week back, I am proud and grateful for each of you: Proud of your flexibility and resilience as we venture forward, and grateful we have found a way -- perhaps an imperfect way, but a way nonetheless -- to teach, talk and to be together during this global pandemic.
I am grateful as well for the community we have established and the community we will foster in these difficult times. I am grateful for our K-State family, and proud of how it is rising to the occasion.
For inspiration, you have only to look to Andrew Smith, our broadcast professor and the first person in Manhattan to be stricken with the coronavirus. Andrew, who, thankfully, is out of the ICU and recovering at home, has shared a number of video chats, thanking the public for the outpouring of support and challenging us to take care of each other. Here's his latest post.
Andrew contracted the virus on a study abroad trip to London. Andrew's wife and two daughters, who accompanied him on the trip, are showing symptoms, but do not require hospitalization and are home with Andrew, all on the mend.
JMC and I intend to rise to Andrew's challenge to care for each other. We are here for you. We want to help you in this time of transition. If you are having trouble making the shift to online learning, if your internet service is unreliable, if you need to talk, reach out for us. Let us know what is going on and what you need. Remember, you are part of an incredible JMC family who is here to help and support you.
So don't hesitate to call on us. I promise we will hear you and we will try hard to help. We are all moving forward this semester grounded in flexibility, compassion and communication. Also make sure to stay connected to our JMC blog at https://jmc.k-state.edu/news/ and our JMC social media on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook.
Thanks and be well,
Dr. Steven Smethers
